Drawn from the documentary of the same name, The Scroll is a book of spiritual inspiration from some of the major figures in the African-American community. My job was to find a way to both reflect the content of the book and also to integrate fairly small images of these leaders into the chapter openers. I began my design by playing with the scroll image on the book’s cover. It has a nice curve at the bottom, which I realized could be used as the bottom of a stylized bookmark referencing the ribbons which you sometimes find in the bindings of religious texts; the rest of the design grew from there.
