Most of the time, when I’m designing a new book, I get a full manuscript to work with–not always an edited manuscript, but a full manuscript. With this book, as I recall, I didn’t. That meant I had to go by the catalogue description, the tone of the pages I had, the cover, and the title. Since plunking down an image of a pagoda seemed a bit too literal, I went with an all type design that I felt went well with both the delicate/memory tone of the pages I had and the image of a dream-pagoda.
